The Host Server has been offering hosting solutions to their customers sine April of 2001. This includes domain name registration as well. T he servers are located in the United States, which is nice for most people. They have a fairly good overall reputation though as with any hosting company this old there are some complaints.
While the level of hosting is reasonable, their website and some of the features they offer feel a little outdated. They only offer shared hosting though, so if you just want basic US hosting solutions, this is not a bad company to consider.
The hosting with this company is going to be quite stable. They have a good data center that they operate out of and while they may oversell their servers slightly, it is not going to cause downtime. They have a 99.9% uptime guarantee as well. Overall, the stability of the hosting is one of their strong points.
This company provides three options when it comes to shared hosting solutions and they are all laid out in an easy to understand format. The ‘smart starter’ package will provide you with 5 gigs of disk space and 5 gigs of bandwidth. The other two packages offer 10 and 25 gigs of disk space and bandwidth respectively. The fact that they have disk space and bandwidth equal is a little concerning since most companies today offer significantly more bandwidth.
You can add on things like domains, disk space and more for an added monthly fee, but the prices for this are much higher than they should be. For example, an ‘add on’ domain is $3.75 per month. Just buying a domain is only around $12 per year for most companies. Adding a sub-domain is also not free, which it always is with other companies. Other pricing issues like this will be touched on in the pricing section, but suffice it to say that if you need any extra features, this may not be the right company to work with.
If you do need technical support services you will likely have a good experience with this company. They are easy to get in touch with and can handle most types of issues without a problem. You can reach out to them by submitting a support ticket and they will get your issues fixed quickly. They also have a nice knowledge base and a page that gives you the current status of their servers.
The base prices for the shared hosting packages are $5, $10 and $25 per month. The low end option isn’t bad but beyond that you are already getting overcharged for the level of service you are getting. When you look at the fact that you have to pay for some ‘extras’ that often come for free with other companies it is easy to see this is not a great company to host with in terms of price.
Some examples of the extras include $3.75 per month extra for sub-domains, 1 gig of disk space, 1 gig of bandwidth and an extra domain. This is $3.75 per month for EACH of these things. On top of that, if you want a unique IP address you have to pay $27.50 per year (except for the highest end package, in which case it is included).
This company really isn’t a great option for most people. While you may be happy with their service, which isn’t bad, the prices are really unreasonable. You can find other companies that will provide much better features for a much lower price. Unless there is some specific reason not to, most people will want to go with another company for their hosting solution.
