• Latency: The average time per calculation was 2.18 milliseconds. The maximum time it took was 4.09 ms.
• Threads fairness: This showed the workload was evenly distributed.

This CPU benchmarking result indicates that the server’s CPU performed well for basic tasks but was not very fast, which is expected for an entry-level server.

From there, I clicked on “Products” in the top main menu and then chose “Cloud Servers” from the dropdown. This took me to a page outlining their various cloud server options.

I scrolled down to view the pricing and decided to go with their entry-level plan: CPU 1 x 3 GHz, RAM 1 GB, NVMe 25 GB, and Bandwidth 200 Mbps, priced at $4 monthly.

After selecting that, I clicked “Sign up”, which prompted me to create an account. I had the option of signing up with my email, Google, or GitHub. I chose to sign up with my email, and after entering it, I was immediately asked to create a password.

On the next page, I was presented with a comprehensive server configuration screen. Here’s what I saw:

• Choose Region: I had the option of several regions, including New York, San Jose, the Netherlands, and Poland, each with its associated latency. I chose New York.
• Choose an Image: Under operating systems, I had the choice of Ubuntu, Debian, and CentOS. I selected Ubuntu version 22.04. I could also choose custom images or images from a marketplace.
• Choose your Plan: The page displayed several fixed plans, including the base plan I chose for registration. It displayed all the resource specifications along with their respective prices. There was also an option to create a custom plan.
• Network: There was a section to combine services into a private network, with options for IPv4 and Public IP addresses. I chose the public IP option, which cost $2 per month.
• Additional Features: The page also allowed me to select additional features like backups for $1.75 and to set up SSH keys for secure connections, I chose to add backups as well for $1.75/mo. There was also a section for Cloud-init to specify a script.
• Finalize Details: At the end of the form, I gave the server a name and had the option of adding a comment. It then summarized my chosen options, including the operating system, region, CPU, RAM, NVMe, pricing, and selected extra features. I saw that the total price would be $5.75/mo for the server.

After reviewing everything, I clicked “Create server.”

The next page showed me a dashboard with a balance of $0, indicating that my account was not paid. It displayed a payment section where I could add funds, choosing to pay $5.75 as the initial amount needed to run the server.

Hostman’s pay-as-you-go model requires you to top up your balance to activate services.

I had the option of adding funds by linking a credit/debit card, which I proceeded to do. I clicked “Submit Payment” and was directed to a secure payment page where I completed the transaction. I received a payment confirmation email shortly after, confirming my successful registration and payment.

After the payment confirmation, I returned to the dashboard, and there it was, my new server, ready to go!

To continue assessing Hostman’s ease of use, I wanted to explore its control panel. After successfully registering and deploying a cloud server, I navigated to my dashboard. Under the “Services” section, I clicked on my newly created server to open its management interface.

This took me to the control panel, which provided a wealth of information and options for managing my virtual server.

The first tab I landed on was the “Dashboard.” It presented a clear and concise overview of my server’s current status. At the top, I saw “Statistics for a day,” with the option to “Show the fixed scale.” Below, the dashboard displayed the following key metrics:

• CPU Load: A graph visually showing CPU usage over the past day, with the specific core count listed as “1 x 3 GHz.” This gave me an instant idea of how my server’s CPU was performing. The graph helped me observe fluctuations and understand periods of high or low CPU usage.
• Traffic: A graph displaying both inbound and outbound traffic, with my allocated bandwidth at 200 Mbps. This allowed me to track data transfer rates and monitor my server’s network activity. The two distinct lines made it simple to compare inbound and outbound traffic.
• RAM: The dashboard showed the amount of RAM (1 GB), which included used, used with cache, and total amount. This data provides a quick overview of memory utilization.
• Disk Load: This section detailed my disk usage on my 25 GB NVMe drive, showing the percentage used (10%) as well as detailed information regarding read/write times. The breakdown of the amount of used, free, and total space made it easy to understand disk consumption.
• Main Disk: Another visual presentation of disk space is a pie chart showing that I used 10% of my storage. Below, it shows the amount of storage used (2.3GB), the amount of free space (22.7GB), and the total disk size (25GB).
• Public & Private IPs: My public IPv4 and private IP addresses were clearly displayed, with a copy icon next to each. This provided quick access to these details.
• SSH Connection: It provided a direct command for SSH connection ( ssh root@166.1.227.176).
• Root Password: This section displayed my root password, which I could view by clicking on “Show.”
• Locked Ports: It also provided a list of the locked ports on my server (25, 389, 53413, 3389, 587, 465, 25), which helped me understand its security.

Beyond the dashboard, the control panel offered several other tabs, each with specific functions:

• Access: This section likely allows for the management of access credentials, SSH keys, and potentially other security options for the server.
• Network: I could manage networking settings here, likely including firewall rules, private networks, and other related parameters for the server.

While I’m always wary of over-hyped claims, Hostman delivered solid performance in my tests. Though the CPU performance wasn’t as strong as the disk speeds, it was still reliable. I was also pleased with their global reach, offering various server locations to choose from, which is crucial for low-latency access.
