Hostinger Free Domain: How It Works, What Qualifies, and the Fine Print

Hostinger Free Domain: How It Works, What Qualifies, and the Fine Print

How to Install WordPress on Hostinger

Hostinger advertises a free domain on nearly every pricing page, but “free” always comes with conditions that only show up once you are actually claiming one.

Before You Start, You Need a Qualifying Hosting Plan

The free domain is tied to a hosting purchase, not something you can claim on its own. If you have not signed up for Hostinger yet, our Hostinger review covers registration along with the different hosting types and plan tiers, so you can see which ones apply before you buy.

Which Plans Actually Include the Free Domain

The offer runs across more of the lineup than I expected. It’s not limited to one entry-level plan.

Hosting typePlans that include it
Shared web hostingPremium, Unlimited, Cloud Startup
Hosting for WordPressPremium, Unlimited, Cloud Startup
VPS hostingKVM 1, KVM 2, KVM 4, KVM 8
Cloud hostingCloud Startup, Professional, Enterprise

Every plan card lists Domain – free for 1 year as a line item, and it holds true across shared, cloud, and VPS products rather than being a single-plan promotion.

The Real Conditions Behind “Free”

I asked Kodee directly rather than trusting the pricing page, and got a much more specific answer than what is printed on the site. Here is what actually applies:

Takeaways
  • The offer covers one year of a new domain registration only
  • It applies to new purchases, not renewals, upgrades, monthly plans, or billing-cycle changes
  • Your plan must be billed for 12 months or longer, monthly billing does not qualify
  • Domain extension availability depends on your region and the active promotion
  • You must claim the domain within 12 months of the eligible purchase, it is not available indefinitely across the whole plan term
  • The domain renews at the standard registration rate for that extension once the first year ends

At checkout, the cart shows a clear confirmation the moment a qualifying plan and term are selected.

The tooltip next to that confirmation spells out the same 12-month minimum Kodee confirmed, along with the reminder that renewal happens at the regular price.

Which Domain Extensions Are Actually Free

Not every extension qualifies, even on a plan that includes the offer. According to Kodee, the current eligible list for a US account is:

.tech, .cloud, .in, .me, .com, .fun, .net, .org, .uno, .xyz, .help, .host, .link, .live, .shop, .site, .click, .email, .press, .space, .store, .online, .digital, .website

Extensions outside that list require a separate paid registration even with a qualifying plan, and the exact list can vary by region and by whatever promotion is active at the time. Confirm your own account’s eligible extensions during the claim process rather than assuming this list applies everywhere.

How I Claimed My Free Domain

There are two points where you can claim it, at checkout on a new purchase, or later from inside hPanel if you skipped it the first time.

Claiming at Checkout

If you pick a qualifying plan and a 12-month or longer term, a Secure your domain search box appears directly in the cart, letting you search and claim before you even complete the purchase.

Claiming Later From hPanel

I tested this path since it covers anyone who already has a plan but has not claimed a domain yet.

On the Home screen, Hostinger surfaces it two ways, through a dedicated promo card lower on the page, and through a Claim your free domain item in the to-do list.

My test account actually had three separate claim entries stacked in the to-dos, one tied to the hosting plan and two tied to VPS instances, since VPS plans carry the same benefit with their own separate claim.

Clicking Claim domain on any of these to-dos starts the claim flow.

The claim screen told me I could register up to three free domains, matching the three separate to-do entries I saw. I typed a domain name to check availability.

Once a domain shows as available, click Next.

This confirmation screen is the clearest picture of the actual deal. hostadvice.tech showed $0.00 for the first year against a struck-through regular price of $63.99, with the renewal date and renewal price both stated upfront, August 22, 2027, at $63.99 a year. Nothing about the renewal terms was hidden or buried in a separate page.

Clicking Claim domain kicks off registration immediately.

The registration finished in well under a minute and confirmed the domain was mine.

Hostinger then offers to connect the new domain to a website or a business email account, both skippable if you just want the domain claimed for now.

What Happens After You Claim

The domain shows up immediately in Domains > Domain portfolio, marked Active, with its expiration date and an auto-renewal toggle you can turn on or off from the same row.

Opening the domain itself shows a short setup checklist (register, create or migrate a website, claim a business email, add Domain Shield) plus the DNS and nameserver values assigned to it.

One thing I noticed here, the nameservers on this domain read atlas.dns-parking.com and hyperion.dns-parking.com rather than the ns1 and ns2 naming pattern I have seen on other Hostinger domains.

The values still follow the dns-parking.com format, but the specific subdomain labels are not fixed, so always check the exact values on your own domain rather than assuming a standard pair.

WHOIS Privacy and Domain Shield

WHOIS privacy protection comes included at no extra cost on eligible free domains, and it was set to Protected by default on mine, meaning my contact details are hidden from public WHOIS lookups and replaced with Hostinger’s own.

Kodee flagged one exception to know before assuming this applies everywhere, some country-code and regulated extensions do not allow privacy protection at all, in which case certain registrant details stay publicly visible regardless of this setting.

Domain Shield is a separate paid add-on at $9.99 a year, and it is not part of the free domain offer. It adds a 40-day grace period to renew after expiration without losing the domain, keeps DNS records active during that grace window so the site and email stay up, and requires two-factor authentication for transfers and DNS changes.

What Happens If You Cancel Within the Money-Back Window

This is the part most people overlook. If you request a hosting refund during the 30-day money-back guarantee period, the free domain is not refunded along with it.

Instead, the domain’s registration cost gets deducted from the hosting refund, and the domain usually stays registered to you for its paid term. The domain itself is non-refundable and cannot be exchanged for a different one.

If you simply turn off auto-renewal without requesting a refund, none of this applies, no charge happens immediately, and the domain just stays active until its first year ends and the standard renewal price kicks in.

Bottom Line

The free domain offer is real, not a bait-and-switch, and the claim process itself was fast and transparent about pricing every step of the way.

The renewal cost and date are shown upfront rather than buried, and WHOIS privacy comes bundled in for most extensions at no extra charge.

Where it gets people is the fine print outside the claim screen itself, the 12-month minimum term, the 12-month claim deadline, the deducted domain cost if you refund your hosting, and the fact that not every extension qualifies even on a plan that advertises the benefit. Read those conditions before you buy rather than after, and the offer holds up as a genuine discount rather than a marketing hook.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hostinger's free domain actually free?

Yes, for the first year, on a new domain registration tied to a qualifying plan billed for 12 months or longer. It renews at the standard registration rate for that extension after the first year, and that renewal price is shown upfront when you claim the domain.

Which Hostinger plans include a free domain?

Premium, Unlimited, and Cloud Startup on shared and WordPress hosting, all four VPS KVM plans, and the Cloud Startup, Professional, and Enterprise cloud hosting tiers all include it, as long as the billing term is 12 months or longer.

Can I use the free domain offer on a domain I already own?

No. The offer only applies to a new domain registration. If you want to move a domain you already own to Hostinger, that is a separate transfer purchase and the free domain benefit does not apply to it.

What happens to my free domain if I cancel my hosting during the refund period?

The domain’s registration cost gets deducted from your hosting refund rather than refunded separately, and the domain usually stays registered to you. It cannot be exchanged or refunded as a standalone item.

Do I have to claim the free domain right away?

No, but you cannot wait indefinitely either. You have 12 months from the eligible purchase to claim it, either during checkout or later from hPanel under Domains, and the exact deadline for your account is shown in hPanel.
