upgrades its entire block storage fleet with faster, better performing, and more reliable NVMe (non-volatile memory express) storage.
NVMe rollout will cover the company’s first erasure-coded block storage cluster. It’s a method that uses an algorithm to divide data into pieces and store it in Ceph. In turn, the process significantly improves storage efficiency over replicated clusters.

NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) is a super-fast way to access non-volatile memory. The technology can deliver a 10-20x boost in throughput over standard spinning hard disk drives and up to 2,000x IOPS gain, says Linode.
Chris Aker, who serves the role of a founder and CEO at
, had this to say:We put a lot of effort into making our block storage platform more performant and efficient. Using erasure-coded clusters, we’re able to extract 160% more usable storage out of the same raw disk capacity. It’s an incredible increase in storage efficiency done in a way that allows us to deliver high performance without creating a premium tier as most other providers would.
With this upgrade, Linode will allow its customers to attach highly accessible and scalable storage volumes to cloud instances quickly. In turn, users will notice substantial performance improvements while using the NVMe-backed block storage in different areas, especially workloads requiring fast storage and high consistency.
Aker further explained:
Making things faster is good. Making them faster, more resilient, and more reliable is even better. And doing it in a way that doesn’t cost customers more is what developers have come to expect from us.
We are one of the first hyperscale cloud providers to deploy NVMe at scale, claims Linode.
The company will provide this performance upgrade to all of its clients for free. In other words, Block Storage rates will remain at $0.10/GB per month.
Linode will begin the rollout in its Atlanta data center. However, the company plans to upgrade its entire global network over the next quarter.

customer with an existing block storage volume, you can migrate it once the NVMe becomes available in your data center region.
